The abundant water that emanates from all of Mariola’s slopes has led successive generations in the area to develop a wide variety of infrastructures to make the most of it. Thus, a string of aquifers, many of them of Arab origin, bring the precious liquid to every corner where it does not naturally reach to irrigate plantations, without leaving aside the extensive network of ponds, such as the cave of the Font de Alfafara, which serve to store it in times of abundance.
A special mention should be made of the number of fountains distributed both in the urban centres and on the outskirts. Public washing places are another frequent installation in the towns of the Sierra Mariola.
Finally, the strength of rivers and wadis such as the Clariano or the Vinalopó has historically been the driving force behind the area’s textile and paper industry. Thus, all kinds of mills are distributed along its courses, evoking a time when water was the only source of energy that existed.
