Muro is always a good option to visit at any time of the year, but if you are planning to spend the month of May you cannot miss its Moors and Christians Festival, in honour of Nuestra Señora de los Desamparados, which dates back to 1822. These patron saint’s fiestas are held every year on the second weekend in May. The groups parade around in sumptuous and happy fashion to the rhythm of pasodobles and Moorish marches – a spectacle not to be missed!
The festival is made up of two sides, the Moorish side and the Christian side. The first is made up of six comparsas or filaes: La Llana, the Moors of the Rif, the Tariks, the Realists, the Verda and the Marroks. And, respectively, five groups make up the Christian side: the Mare de Déu, Maseros, Contrabandistes, Pirates, Arquers and Templaris. In addition, you will discover a welcoming village that welcomes tourists with open hands and makes them feel part of its traditions.
On the third weekend of May, the festival is once again present in the town, to accompany the patron saint, Our Lady of the Forsaken, to her home: the chapel.
In 1998 the Moors and Christians Festival castle was built, where the Festival Board and the Festive Museum are located. A good option to get to know one of the most deeply rooted traditions of these lands.
