The generalization of the use of steam led to a series of changes in the physiognomy of the industrial landscape in our regions, with the construction of chimneys of considerable height during the 19th and early 20th centuries.
The new technologies required the supply of coal not very abundant in the area, which is why the Railway and Harbour Company Limited built the Alcoi-Gandia train line in 1893 to provide an outlet for products from the northern interior of the province of Alicante and supply it with coal.
In Muro, around the station and quay of this railway line proliferated new manufacturing facilities. Among them were Cartonajes Matarredona, since 1921, and the orujera Aceitera San Jorge, since 1955.
The chimney that presides over the square is the only testimony that is preserved of the old orujera Mariano Miquel CIA from the year 1921. It has a pentagonal shape of brickwork with decoration of longitudinal lines. This type of chimney favoured the draught of steam boilers and, at the same time, evacuated the fumes. They were built by specialized workers and they were more than 27 meters high.
