If we want to know a real inland village we can’t miss Alfafara. It belongs to the region of the Comtat and is located in the north of the province of Alicante, in an area bordering the province of Valencia. At 582 m above sea level, the town of Alfafara is located at the foot of the Sierra Mariola, in a small valley between the Sierra Mariola and Agullent and very close to municipalities such as Agres or Bocairente. This mountainous condition of part of the municipality favors the existence of natural places and beautiful corners that invite to make green routes of hiking, to put the backpack and to leave of excursion by beautiful places that we cannot lose like those of the Source of the Azud, the Tarragó Fountain, the Fountain Cave, the Bolumini Cave, the Fontanarets, the Pantanet cave mill, the necropolis of the Masía del Pozo, the Carbonell Fountain, the Ventanas Caves or the hermitage of San Antonio and Nuestra Señora de la Luz.
Even the name Alfafara is related to the nature that surrounds it. It is believed that it probably comes from the word ALFAWARA”, which in Arabic means “the fountain that springs up with violence” and almost certainly refers to a waterfall that, in rainy seasons, falls from the top of a rock known as Peña del Chorro.
