The town of Agres annually celebrates this traditional and irreverent festival in which the streets of the town and its authority are taken over by the population for four days. They have been declared Festivals of Local Tourist Interest by the Generalitat.
They are based on a medieval tradition, by which the people of the town when Lent was approaching, took over the authority of the town for 40 hours and did whatever they wanted, without any kind of prohibition. It seems that the lords of the village marked their territory on the trees and what people used to do in this festival was to cut down one of these trees so that the lord could not determine his territory. All this led to a pagan festival that is still celebrated today. It may be the oldest festival known in Agres. They are held the weekend before Ash Wednesday.
