Its main national destinations are Madrid-Barajas, Palma de Mallorca, Barcelona-El Prat and Seville airports, while its main international destinations are France (Paris), England (London), Italy and Holland, among others. The airline Air Nostrum (a franchisee of Iberia Regional) is the main airline at the airport, with a major base there.
Aeroport Alicante-Elche International Airport, some 65 kilometres from the Serra de Mariola, is also popularly known as Aeropuerto Alicante-El Altet, Aeropuerto El Altet, or Aeroport d’Alacant in Valenciano. The diversity of names by which the airport of Alicante can be known is given by its geographical location, as it is in the province of Alicante, within the municipality of Elche (Elx in Valencian), in the district of El Altet.
Due to this privileged geographical situation of great tourist interest, Alicante airport operates mainly with international routes. Eighty percent of its passengers are international travellers, mainly to destinations such as the United Kingdom, Germany and the Netherlands. As far as domestic destinations are concerned, flights to Madrid, Barcelona and Palma de Mallorca airports are the ones with the highest number of connections. This airport, due to its volume of passengers and cargo, currently occupies the sixth position in the Spanish airport network.
